Strange cough: 70 pupils quarantined in Jigawa

A total of 70 pupils of Gumel Model Boarding Primary School in Jigawa State have been infected by a strange cough, Daily Trust learnt in Dutse yesterday. The strange cough, which was said to have been noticed four days ago, affected 70 pupils in the boarding institution, a situation that made government to quarantine the infected pupils in order to prevent the disease from spreading.
Spokesman of the state ministry of education Ismaila Ibrahim told journalists in Dutse yesterday that education commissioner Prof Haruna Wakili and his health counterpart Dr Hassana Hussaini Adamu had already visited the school to assess the situation.

Of the 650 pupils in the school, 43 girls and 27 boys were confirmed infected and they had already been quarantined in separate places in the school, he said. The saliva of the infected pupils, according to him, was taken and sent to Gumel General Hospital for laboratory test to know the type of cough affecting them.

Those not infected, he said, were given antibiotics to prevent them from getting infected, saying medical personnel have been mobilized from the ministry of health to take care of the affected pupils who have already been placed on drugs.
