A 3-year-old girl is recovering in the hospital after swallowing 37 high-powered magnets, KPTV of Oregon reports. Payton Bushnell was complaining of stomach pains and after her symptoms didn't improve her parents took her to the hospital.
After taking an X-ray of her stomach, doctors discovered the magnets had snapped her intestines together, ripped three holes in her lower intestine and one in her stomach.
Doctors at Randall Children's Hospital rushed Bushnell into surgery and were able to save her. The toddler is now on her way to a full recovery.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission has received reports of 22 children ages 18 months to 15 years old swallowing such magnets since 2009. The magnets, often used in desktop toys for adults, come with warnings that they are for adult use only and should be kept away from children.
"I have looked at X-rays of children with magnets in their intestines and you can see how they stick together and cause a severe blockage," CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum said in an interview.
